Is hyaluronic acid treatment safe?

Hyaluronic acid treatment has a high safety profile when performed by a qualified physician using medical-grade products. At our clinic, we work exclusively with biocompatible, resorbable hyaluronic acid from leading international laboratories, including well-established brands such as Juvederm, Restylane and Belotero.

In some cases, mild and transient side effects may occur, such as redness, swelling or small bruises, which usually resolve within a few days.

Am I a suitable candidate for the treatment?

In general, hyaluronic acid treatment is suitable for most people. However, the specific indication and the most appropriate type of treatment are always determined after an individualised medical assessment, taking into account each patient’s characteristics, goals and clinical history.

The treatment is contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding, not because it has been shown to be unsafe, but because there is insufficient scientific evidence to support its use in these situations. For this reason, and following a principle of medical prudence, we recommend postponing the treatment until this period has ended.

How long do the effects of hyaluronic acid under-eye fillers last?

The duration of the effects of hyaluronic acid facial fillers generally ranges, as a guideline, between 12 and 18 months, as the body gradually resorbs the product over time, although not always completely.

In many cases, depending on the type of hyaluronic acid used, the treated area and the individual characteristics of each patient, the benefits of the treatment may persist beyond 18 months.

In patients who have previously undergone well-indicated and properly performed treatments, it is common to observe a better tissue response and a reduced need for touch-ups, with results remaining more stable over time.

Factors such as age, metabolism and lifestyle may influence the duration of the results.

When the effect begins to diminish, an individualised touch-up or maintenance treatment may be considered, always following a medical assessment, in order to preserve natural and balanced results.

How are dark under-eye circles treated?

Dark circles do not have a single cause, which is why their treatment always depends on a prior medical assessment. In general, they are mainly related to two different underlying mechanisms:

Tear trough hollowing due to facial ageing: over time, there is a loss of both fat and bony volume in the infraorbital area and the cheek. This hollowing creates a permanent shadow, resulting in a dark appearance even when the skin itself is not pigmented.
Darkening of the lower eyelid skin: in this case, the skin appears darker due to factors such as genetics, vascular changes, chronic fatigue, stress, lack of adequate rest or certain medical conditions.

Under-eye filler with hyaluronic acid is effective when dark circles are caused by volume loss and the shadowing associated with tear trough hollowing. In these cases, treatment can significantly improve the dark appearance by restoring a smooth transition between the under-eye area and the cheek. However, it does not address superficial skin pigmentation.

When dark circles are mainly due to changes in skin quality or pigmentation, medical treatments such as polynucleotides, facial PRP or vitamin mesotherapy may be indicated, aimed at improving skin texture, brightness and overall tone. In selected cases, chemical peels may contribute to a gradual improvement.

In cases of hereditary hyperpigmented dark circles, there is no definitive treatment, although these approaches may help improve their appearance.

Can tear trough fillers improve the appearance of eye bags?

No. Hyaluronic acid filler does not eliminate under-eye bags. Under-eye bags are usually caused by a protrusion of fat in the lower eyelid and, in these cases, the definitive treatment is surgical, although not everyone is a suitable candidate for surgery.

However, in carefully selected patients, hyaluronic acid filler may help improve the appearance of under-eye bags, not by eliminating them, but by softening the transition between the tear trough and the cheek. By restoring volume in the adjacent hollow area, the contrast between the bag and the infraorbital groove is reduced, making the bag appear less noticeable.

For this reason, a prior diagnosis is essential, as an inappropriately indicated filler can worsen the appearance of the area.
