Facial Harmonization with Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

Every face needs a tailored plan before deciding where to place hyaluronic acid fillers.

Sometimes it is not one specific wrinkle or one isolated area. It is that the face has lost balance: the cheekbone no longer projects as it used to, the facial oval has become less defined, or an asymmetry has appeared that was not there before. The face looks tired, even if you cannot point to exactly why.

Facial harmonization addresses precisely this: it does not fill isolated areas, but rebuilds facial structure where support has been lost. Hyaluronic acid is the material. The clinical judgement —where to place it, in what order, and what not to treat— determines whether the result blends with your face or sits on top of it.

Dr Manuela Gheorghiu plans each case through a complete facial assessment —proportions, support, tissue quality, and any previous treatments— before recommending anything.

We provide guidance based on medical expertise.

Facial harmonization with hyaluronic acid.

What does facial harmonization involve?

Harmonizing is not simply filling. It means restoring a balance the face has lost —due to ageing, weight changes, or the natural way bone structure and soft tissues evolve over time.

Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally produced by the body. In aesthetic medicine, it is used as an injectable gel: it is biocompatible, recognized by your body, and gradually integrated and broken down over time. This means the results are reversible and the safety profile is high.

Depending on where and how it is placed, it can serve different purposes: in deep planes, it rebuilds support; in intermediate planes, it restores projection; and superficially, it can improve skin quality. Not all hyaluronic acid fillers are the same or used for the same purpose: choosing the right product is part of the clinical decision.

But the material is only half of the treatment. The other half is clinical judgement: which areas to reinforce, which ones not to touch, in what order to proceed, and how much product is enough. A well-harmonized face is not noticeable precisely because no more has been added than necessary, and nothing has been treated without reason.

This is why facial harmonization is not a standard treatment by area. It is a plan that starts from your face as a whole and makes decisions from there.

Is it right for you?

Not every face needs harmonization, and not every concern can be treated with hyaluronic acid fillers. During the assessment, we distinguish between three scenarios:

When hyaluronic acid fillers are the main indication

You have lost structural support: the cheekbone has lost projection, the jawline definition, or there is an asymmetry affecting the facial proportions. The plan is clear and the tool is appropriate.

When the problem is mixed

There is loss of support, but also skin laxity or poor skin quality. In these cases, it is not always best to start with hyaluronic acid fillers: it is often better to improve tissue quality first and reassess afterwards. This helps avoid overtreatment.

When another treatment is indicated

If the main concern is texture, radiance, pores, superficial wrinkles or skin laxity without structural loss, hyaluronic acid fillers are not the first option. Biostimulation, polynucleotides or, in some cases, a surgical assessment may be more appropriate.

It is also not suitable when the expectation is to transform facial features or resolve everything in a single session. Facial harmonization works with your anatomy, not against it.

What can this treatment achieve?

Which areas can be treated as part of facial harmonization?

Each area plays a role in the balance of the face. Not all areas are treated, and not always the same ones: the plan determines which structures should be reinforced based on what the assessment shows.

Cheeks and malar area

When the midface has lost projection and the face looks flatter or more descended than before.

Jawline

When the contour of the facial oval has become blurred and definition has been lost.

Chin

When the profile needs balance between the facial thirds, especially in proportion to the nose and forehead.

Nasolabial folds and marionette lines

When the folds are deep and form part of a structural imbalance, rather than only an expression line.

Under-eye Area

In selected cases, when there is a true hollow between the lower eyelid and the cheek.

Lips

When they are part of a global harmonization plan to balance facial proportions. Always with a natural and medical approach.

What is the assessment like?

We start by listening: what you feel has changed in your face, what you would like to improve, whether you have had previous treatments and how that experience was.

Then we analyse your face as a system, not as a sum of isolated areas. We assess the proportions between the facial thirds, identify which support points have lost structure, evaluate tissue quality and thickness, and map any residual product from previous treatments.

Based on this analysis, we give you a clear indication: which areas should be reinforced, which ones are better left untreated, in what order to proceed and why. Sometimes the answer is to start with something else —biostimulation, or waiting— before placing hyaluronic acid fillers. Sometimes it is not a treatment we recommend.

You leave with a written plan, a timeline if the case requires phases, and a detailed quote. You decide afterwards, calmly.

Frequently Asked Questions About Facial Harmonization

Artificial-looking results usually appear when injections are performed by area and on demand, without a plan based on the face as a whole or a clear decision about what should not be treated.

Here, the plan starts from your facial structure and from the decision of what to reinforce, in what order and —above all— where to stop. No guarantee is absolute, but this approach helps the result integrate rather than sit on top of the face.

It depends on the case. Some plans can be completed in one session; others require two or three spaced sessions to assess how the tissue integrates each step before continuing. The number of sessions is defined during the assessment and included in the written plan.

The supportive effect can be seen from the same day, although the final result is assessed at four weeks, once the product has fully integrated with the tissue. The usual duration is twelve to eighteen months, depending on the product, placement plane, treated area and lifestyle habits.

It is safe when performed by a qualified doctor using medical-grade products. We work with biocompatible, resorbable materials, which provide a high safety profile.

After the injections, mild and temporary effects such as redness, swelling or small bruises may appear and usually settle within a few days. We provide personalised aftercare advice to minimise discomfort and support a smooth recovery.

At Clínica Provença, we do not use permanent fillers, as they are associated with long-term complications. We prioritise safe, reversible treatments supported by clinical evidence.

This treatment is not performed in the presence of active infection or inflammation, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, in certain active autoimmune diseases, significant immunosuppression or relevant histories of hypersensitivity. It may also be discouraged in cases of very advanced laxity, expectations of facial transformation or circumstances that require a different prior assessment.

This is decided during the consultation. The clinical examination determines whether the main issue is structural, dermal, diffuse loss of support or a combination of several factors, and in which order they should be treated.

You can return to your usual activities immediately, with no need for downtime.

During the first 24–48 hours, we recommend avoiding intense exercise, high heat (such as saunas or very hot baths) and manipulation of the treated area, to support a proper recovery.

Mild and temporary effects such as slight swelling, tenderness or small bruises are normal and usually resolve within a few days.

After treatment, we provide simple, personalised aftercare instructions that fit easily into your daily routine.
