When the skin on the abdomen begins to lose firmness and support, the first priority is not choosing a treatment, but understanding the underlying cause.
“Abdominal skin laxity” is a single term used to describe very different conditions. In some cases, the skin has lost quality after pregnancy; in others, the change follows significant weight loss. Sometimes the main issue is excess fat, weakened muscles, or simply the natural effects of ageing. Each underlying cause requires a different approach, and in some cases, the most obvious treatment is not the right one.
At Clínica Provença in Barcelona, the assessment is designed to distinguish between these causes. When the main concern is skin quality, collagen biostimulators can improve it from within, progressively and without surgery.
We provide guidance based on medical expertise.
This is an injectable biostimulation treatment using poly-L-lactic acid, designed for cases where the aim is to improve tissue quality and gradually restore firmness.
Rather than filling or tightening the skin from the outside, it works by stimulating the body’s own collagen production. Over the following months, the skin gradually becomes denser, stronger, and better supported from within.
Within this approach, we use two collagen biostimulators with different characteristics depending on the case: Lanluma, a formulation specifically designed for larger body areas, and Sculptra, the poly-L-lactic acid treatment with the longest track record in aesthetic medicine.
It is intended for cases where the abdomen presents skin laxity: thinner, less elastic skin with reduced support. The aim is not to change the shape of the abdomen, but to improve how the skin behaves—its firmness, density and ability to support itself.
Unlike technologies that act from the surface, this treatment improves tissue quality from within. It is planned in stages: we assess how the skin responds and adjust the treatment according to its progress.
It does not remove localised fat, correct diastasis recti or replace surgery when there is significant excess skin. Other approaches may be more appropriate in these cases, and part of our role is to guide you towards them when necessary.
The procedure is performed in the clinic. After marking the area, the product is distributed through carefully planned injections to achieve even biostimulation across the abdomen—including above the navel when needed, so that the result remains consistent throughout the area. Recovery is usually compatible with normal daily activities. Mild swelling, tenderness or small bruises may appear for a few days and gradually resolve.

We analyse what is causing the changes you see: the quality and thickness of the skin, whether localised fat is present, the condition of the abdominal muscles—including possible diastasis recti—and the proportions of the abdomen in relation to your overall body shape.
We then give you a medically reasoned recommendation: what is suitable for your case, what is not, and why. Sometimes the right answer is a different technique; sometimes, no treatment at all.

This is the most common question because they can look similar at first glance. As a general guide, skin laxity is noticeable in the texture—the skin may feel thinner and crease when you bend forward. Localised fat feels more like fullness, while diastasis recti often appears as a central bulge when sitting up. However, it cannot be diagnosed reliably from photographs or a description alone. During the consultation, we examine the abdomen specifically to distinguish between these causes, as each requires a different treatment.
Poly-L-lactic acid can improve skin density and firmness, but it is not a substitute for surgery when significant skin laxity is present.
When skin quality is the primary concern and laxity is mild to moderate, the improvement is both visible and measurable—not only in the skin’s appearance, but also in the way it feels and responds. That’s why careful patient selection is so important.
This is not an immediate-result treatment, as new collagen takes time to develop. Some patients begin to notice changes within a few weeks, and the improvement continues to mature over the following months. As a conservative guide, results may last approximately 18 to 24 months, although this varies according to age, tissue quality and lifestyle.
There is no universal number. In general, one to three sessions are needed, spaced four weeks apart.
The final plan is adjusted according to the degree of laxity, skin quality and the clinical evolution after each phase.
As with any injectable treatment, side effects can occur. In most cases they are mild and temporary, such as swelling, redness, small bruises or tenderness, and usually resolve within a few days.
Less commonly, small irregularities or nodules may develop. These are usually temporary or can be managed with appropriate follow-up. Proper patient selection, precise injection technique, and careful post-treatment monitoring help minimise these effects, which is why the procedure should always be performed in a specialised medical setting.
Yes. In fact, these are two of the most common reasons patients seek treatment. However, the treatment is most effective when the main remaining concern is skin quality. If pregnancy has left a diastasis recti, or major weight loss has resulted in significant excess skin, those conditions should be assessed first, as they may require a different treatment approach.
We will tell you clearly. When excess skin or a structural alteration goes beyond what aesthetic medicine can realistically improve, we will explain why and advise you on the most appropriate next step, even when that treatment is not available at our clinic.
