Expression Lines Treatment

Soften facial expression lines in Barcelona with a personalised medical approach, preserving natural movement.

At Clínica Provença, we understand facial neuromodulation as a medical tool to balance facial movement, not to freeze expressions or standardise features.

For this reason, every treatment begins with a detailed assessment that allows us to design a personalised plan based on your facial expressions, anatomy and aesthetic goals.

Our approach prioritises natural-looking results, safety and sound clinical judgement, avoiding standardised protocols and rigid outcomes.

Treatment of expression lines.

What is the treatment for expression lines?

Expression lines develop as a result of repeated contraction of specific facial muscles. Over time, these dynamic lines can become more pronounced and may remain visible even at rest, giving the face a tired or tense appearance.

The most commonly used treatment for the upper third of the face is based on neuromodulation, which carefully relaxes the activity of specific muscles responsible for expression lines. By reducing this muscle contraction, the skin appears smoother and the face takes on a more rested and balanced appearance.

How is the procedure performed?

Before recommending neuromodulator treatment, we carry out a comprehensive assessment in which we analyse:

This assessment allows us to determine which muscles to modulate, to what extent, and which ones to preserve, tailoring the treatment plan to each patient. This clinical decision-making is essential to achieve natural-looking results and minimise unwanted effects.

Small doses are applied to specific muscles of the upper third of the face to partially relax their contraction.

The goal is not to eliminate expression, but to redistribute muscular activity in order to soften lines that give the face a tired or tense appearance, while maintaining overall facial harmony.

Frequently asked questions about expression lines treatment

The term “Botox” is commonly used as a colloquial way to refer to facial neuromodulation treatments.

In aesthetic medicine, we refer to neuromodulators (botulinum toxin type A), which are medical-use medications that, when correctly indicated and dosed, are used to temporarily relax the contraction of specific facial muscles.

This modulation helps to soften dynamic wrinkles associated with facial movement while maintaining a natural expression.

It is applied with precision to specific muscles of the upper third of the face and is particularly effective in areas such as the forehead, the frown lines and crow’s feet.

Expression lines treatment requires a precise understanding of facial anatomy and each patient’s individual movement patterns. Dr Manuela Gheorghiu, Specialist in Aesthetic Medicine and Medical Director of Clínica Provença, approaches this treatment from a clinical perspective focused on modulating facial movement without altering natural expression.

Her experience in treating the upper third of the face allows her to carry out a detailed assessment of dynamic wrinkles, identify the muscles involved, and determine the appropriate treatment intensity in each area, avoiding rigid or artificial results.

Each case is planned on a fully individualised basis, with clear and honest medical guidance, prioritising natural-looking results, facial balance and safety throughout the entire process.

When correctly indicated and performed in a medical setting by an experienced professional, it is a well-established and commonly performed procedure in aesthetic medicine.

As with any injectable treatment, mild and temporary effects may occur, such as local redness, minor discomfort or occasional bruising in the treated area, which typically resolve spontaneously.

After the session, simple post-treatment recommendations are provided, such as avoiding intense physical exercise, exposure to high heat or manipulation of the treated areas during the first hours, in order to support proper treatment evolution.

Complications are uncommon and are minimised through a prior medical assessment, individualised planning and appropriate technique. During the consultation, the benefits, limitations and potential effects are clearly explained, allowing the patient to make an informed decision.

In most cases, yes. Expression lines treatment is suitable for a wide range of patients, always following an individualised medical assessment.

However, there are situations in which the treatment should be postponed or avoided, such as during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or in the presence of active infections, inflammation or wounds in the area to be treated.

During the consultation, your medical history, skin condition and aesthetic goals are reviewed in order to confirm whether this treatment is suitable for you or to consider more appropriate alternatives in each case.

Improvement is usually noticed gradually in the days following the treatment. Results continue to develop progressively, and in most cases the full effect can be seen after approximately two weeks.

The response may vary depending on each patient’s individual characteristics, such as muscle strength and facial movement patterns, which are assessed during the medical consultation.

The duration of the effect is temporary and varies from patient to patient, depending on muscle strength, facial expressiveness and individual characteristics.

As a general guideline, the effects typically last for approximately 4 to 6 months, gradually diminishing over time.

During the medical consultation, the treatment’s progression is assessed and, if necessary, the most appropriate timing for a touch-up is determined.

The appropriate timing depends on each patient’s facial characteristics, expressiveness and individual goals.

In some cases, treatment is initiated when the first expression lines begin to appear, with the aim of softening facial movement and preventing dynamic lines from becoming more pronounced over time.

In other cases, when expression lines are already present, treatment can help improve facial expression and achieve a more rested appearance. In all situations, indication is established following an individualised assessment.

It is common not to notice immediate changes after the treatment. The effects appear progressively over the following days and usually become fully established after approximately two weeks.

After the session, you can resume your normal daily activities. However, it is recommended to avoid lying down during the first hours after treatment and to postpone intense physical exercise, exposure to high heat (such as saunas) or alcohol consumption for the first 24–48 hours.

In some cases, mild local discomfort or minor bruising may occur. To support proper recovery, it is advised to avoid direct sun exposure during the first 24 hours and to use sun protection.

These recommendations are explained in a personalised manner after the session.

Yes. To achieve a more complete and balanced facial rejuvenation, expression lines treatment can be safely combined with other aesthetic medicine procedures, provided that the diagnosis indicates it.

Depending on each patient’s needs, it may be combined with treatments aimed at improving facial laxity, enhancing skin quality, or with hyaluronic acid fillers designed to soften folds or harmonise the face.

During the assessment, we individually analyse the facial changes present and the results you wish to achieve in order to determine which non-surgical combinations are most appropriate in each case, following a medical, personalised approach focused on natural-looking results.
