Skin has a memory: it retains the effects of years of sun exposure, the traces of previous acne and a complexion that may no longer look as even as it once did.
A chemical peel works precisely on that accumulated damage. This medical treatment removes damaged layers of skin in a controlled way, allowing renewed, brighter and smoother-looking skin to emerge.
At Clínica Provença, we first determine which type of peel is right for your skin and your goals — because there is no single chemical peel. There are several options, and choosing correctly is fundamental to achieving a good result.
We provide guidance based on medical expertise.
A chemical peel involves applying a medical-grade acid solution to the skin to produce controlled exfoliation. It removes damaged cells from the superficial layers and stimulates cell renewal and collagen production. The result is brighter skin with a more even tone and smoother texture.
The main difference between one peel and another is its depth. Superficial peels, using acids such as glycolic or salicylic acid, act on the outermost layer of the skin and improve radiance, texture and the appearance of pores with minimal downtime. Medium-depth peels, commonly performed with trichloroacetic acid, reach deeper layers. They are indicated for sun spots, acne marks and fine lines, and usually involve several days of visible peeling.
The choice of acid, concentration and number of layers depends on your skin type, phototype, the depth of the concern being treated and the time of year. For this reason, at Clínica Provença no chemical peel is performed without a prior medical assessment.
What it does not do: a chemical peel does not treat skin laxity or deep wrinkles, and it does not replace treatments designed to provide structural support or restore lost volume. It improves the quality of the skin’s surface — its radiance, tone and texture. When the concern is different, the treatment must be different too.
What happens during and after the session: the procedure takes only a few minutes. You may feel warmth or tingling while the acid is active, and your skin may look slightly red afterwards, similar to mild sun exposure.
Over the following days, depending on the depth of the peel, the skin may flake or peel. This is part of the renewal process, and we will explain exactly what to expect and how to care for your skin beforehand. Strict sun protection during the following weeks is not optional advice; it is an essential part of the treatment.
A chemical peel may be a suitable option if your skin looks dull and has lost radiance; you have sun spots or uneven pigmentation that makeup no longer conceals well; superficial marks remain from previous acne; your pores appear enlarged or your skin texture is irregular; or fine lines are becoming more noticeable, particularly around the eyes and mouth.
Some cases require greater diagnostic precision before deciding. If the pigmentation is melasma, the indication changes: melasma has hormonal and inflammatory components, and an incorrectly selected peel can reactivate it rather than improve it. It can be treated, but only with the appropriate agent, preparation and realistic expectations — and sometimes another treatment is the better option.
The same applies to sensitive skin, rosacea and higher phototypes, where the choice of acid and concentration requires particular care.
And if your main concern is loss of firmness, a pronounced fold or volume loss, a chemical peel is not the appropriate treatment. In these cases, we use other medical techniques and will explain which options are suitable and why during your consultation.

Results are progressive. A superficial peel can produce a visible improvement after the first session, although the full effect develops over the course of treatment. A medium-depth peel shows its best result once the skin has completed the renewal process, several weeks later. During your consultation, we will explain what you can realistically expect and within what timeframe.
We listen to what concerns you and what you hope to achieve. We assess your skin, including its phototype and sensitivity, the type of concern being treated — pigmentation, marks, texture or fine lines — and its depth. This determines which peel can reach it effectively and which option would be unnecessarily aggressive.
We give you a reasoned medical recommendation: what is appropriate for your case, what is not, and why. Sometimes the answer is another technique; sometimes, no treatment at all.

It depends on the depth of the peel. With a superficial peel, flaking is mild or almost unnoticeable, and you can usually continue your normal routine from the first day.
With a medium-depth peel, the skin peels visibly for several days. This is the renewal process, not a complication. Many patients schedule the treatment around their commitments, and we will help you choose a suitable time so that recovery does not interfere with anything important. In every case, you will leave the clinic knowing exactly what to expect each day and how to care for your skin.
The answer depends on the type of pigmentation. Sun spots and superficial post-inflammatory marks usually respond well to an appropriately selected peel.
Melasma is different. It has hormonal and inflammatory components, and an unsuitable exfoliating treatment can reactivate it. The first step is therefore not to choose a peel, but to diagnose the type and depth of your pigmentation.
When a chemical peel is appropriate, we select the agent and preparation that will protect your skin. When it is not, we will explain why and recommend the alternative that is better suited to your case.
Radiance is often noticeable early, sometimes after the first session. Improvements in pigmentation, texture and marks develop progressively. A course of several sessions, spaced according to your skin’s response, is usually recommended and will be defined by the doctor during your consultation.
Timing also matters. Months with lower sun exposure are generally the best time for deeper peels, and we will take this into account when planning your treatment.
The main contraindications include pregnancy and breastfeeding, active infections in the treatment area — including herpes outbreaks — open wounds and recent treatment with oral isotretinoin, which must be discontinued sufficiently in advance of a peel.
Skin affected by rosacea, active dermatitis or marked sensitivity requires particularly careful assessment. In some cases, treatment is possible with the appropriate agent; in others, a different approach is safer. We review all of this before recommending any procedure.
This is a very common question because both treatments ‘improve the skin’, but they work in opposite ways.
A chemical peel removes damaged cells: it exfoliates, renews and evens the skin tone. Facial vitamin injections and skinboosters replenish what the skin lacks, providing deep hydration, nourishment and improved elasticity.
Dull skin with pigmentation and uneven texture often benefits from a peel, whereas dehydrated, thin or less supple skin may need replenishment. Many patients benefit from both treatments, performed in the correct order.

No. The difference lies in the concentration and the medical judgement behind the treatment. At-home skincare products containing acids can be useful for maintenance and are often included in the homecare plan we prescribe.
Medical-grade chemical peels use concentrations that require a proper understanding of your phototype, appropriate skin preparation and precise control of application time. Without this medical judgement, they can cause burns or pigmentation that may be difficult to correct.
The key question is not which product is stronger, but who determines what your skin needs and who is responsible for managing the treatment and its aftercare.
