You may first notice it when applying make-up—the eye contour is no longer as visible as it used to be—or when someone asks whether you are tired, even after a good night’s sleep. The upper eyelid gradually loses firmness with age, and the eyes are often the first area to show it.
In carefully selected cases, this skin can be tightened without surgery using a plasma technique applied point by point by Dr Manuela Gheorghiu. Whether you are a suitable candidate—and how much improvement can realistically be expected—is precisely what we determine during your consultation.

Non-surgical blepharoplasty is a treatment designed to tighten the skin of the upper or lower eyelid without a scalpel, stitches or an operating theatre. It uses a plasma device that creates a small arc of energy. Applied point by point to the skin, it contracts excess tissue and stimulates collagen production over the following weeks. The eyelid skin becomes firmer through two complementary effects: immediate contraction and the regenerative process that continues afterwards.
It is intended for mild to moderate excess eyelid skin: the fold that begins to descend over the eye contour, reduces the visible space for make-up and can give the eyes a tired appearance that does not reflect how you actually feel.
At Clínica Provença, what makes the difference is not the device itself, but the medical indication. The outcome depends on two factors: whether your eyelid is genuinely suitable for the treatment and the precision with which every point is applied. This is why the procedure is always performed by Dr Manuela Gheorghiu after assessing what is causing the change you see—how much is due to excess skin, how much to loss of firmness, and the role played by the eyebrow position or under-eye bags in the overall appearance of your eyes.
It is equally important to explain what the treatment cannot do. It is not surgery and cannot replace surgical blepharoplasty in every case. It does not remove fatty eye bags—which require a different approach—and it is not suitable when there is significant excess skin. When this applies, we will tell you during the consultation and explain which alternative is more appropriate for you.
The treatment session and the days afterwards: the procedure takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes. A topical anaesthetic cream is applied beforehand to keep discomfort manageable. Immediately afterwards, small dark dots will be visible in the treated area. These are superficial crusts that fall away naturally within around one week and must not be picked or removed.
Some eyelid swelling may occur during the first two or three days. The skin may then remain pink for a period while it regenerates, making careful sun protection essential. Results develop progressively: the initial contraction continues to improve over the following weeks as new collagen forms.
This treatment may be suitable when you have mild to moderate excess eyelid skin—the early drooping that is becoming noticeable but does not yet significantly close the eyes—when you would like to improve it without surgery, or when you underwent surgical blepharoplasty several years ago and the skin has naturally begun to lose firmness again.
Your skin’s starting point also matters. In higher Fitzpatrick skin types—skin that tans very easily or has a naturally darker tone—the risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation is greater, and we will often recommend alternative ways of treating the area. This is one of the first factors we assess, specifically to reduce the risk of an unwanted outcome.
There are also situations in which another treatment is the honest recommendation. If your main concern is fatty bags beneath the eyes, plasma will not remove them: it can improve the skin, but the underlying fat requires a different approach.
When excess skin is significant or begins to interfere with your field of vision, surgery is no longer simply an aesthetic alternative—it is the appropriate medical indication, and we will explain this clearly.
Similarly, if the eyebrow has descended more than the eyelid itself, treating the eyelid skin alone will not correct what you see in the mirror. In all these situations, the consultation is designed to guide you towards the option that genuinely makes sense for your case.

A more open-looking eyelid and a more rested appearance, without changing your features. The eye contour becomes more visible again and, if you wear make-up, there is more eyelid space available. The improvement is gradual, developing over several weeks. People who notice it often do not think you have had a procedure—they simply say that you look well.
The result is long-lasting, although it cannot stop the natural ageing process. The treated skin will continue to age over time, and a maintenance session may be considered in the future.
During your consultation, we will explain the degree of improvement we realistically expect in your individual case, as this depends on your skin, age and the amount of excess tissue present at the outset.
We begin by listening to you: what concerns you about your eyes and what you hope to achieve.
We then assess what is causing the change you see. For the eyelids, this means examining the degree of excess skin and loss of firmness, whether fatty bags are contributing to the concern, the position of the eyebrow, and the characteristics of your skin—including its thickness and Fitzpatrick skin type—in relation to both the result and the recovery process.
This allows us to give you a reasoned recommendation: what is appropriate for your case, what is not, and why. Sometimes the answer is another technique; sometimes, no treatment at all.

We apply a topical anaesthetic cream before beginning. With this, most patients describe the procedure as uncomfortable but manageable, with a brief sensation of heat or a small prick at each treatment point.
You can resume most normal activities from the first day, although there are several practical considerations that we will explain in detail during your consultation.
The small treatment dots remain visible for approximately one week until they fall away naturally, and eyelid swelling may occur during the first two or three days. Make-up must not be applied directly to the area during this period. Afterwards, the skin may remain pink for some time, gradually becoming less noticeable; at that stage, mineral make-up can be used to conceal it.
The main risk associated with this technique is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: dark marks that can develop if the treated skin is exposed to the sun too soon or if the procedure was not appropriately indicated, particularly in higher Fitzpatrick skin types.
We therefore take three precautions: we assess your skin type before recommending treatment—and propose an alternative when the risk is high—apply the energy point by point at the appropriate intensity, and provide a strict sun-protection protocol for the weeks during which the skin is regenerating.
When the aftercare guidance is followed, the skin gradually returns to its usual tone.
In appropriately selected cases, yes; in every case, no. When excess skin is mild or moderate, plasma can create a visibly more open-looking eyelid without surgery or surgical scars.
When excess skin is significant, surgery is the correct indication, and no non-surgical treatment can achieve an equivalent result.
The purpose of the consultation is precisely to explain, with complete honesty, which of these situations applies to you before you invest time and money in treatment.
Not when the bags are caused by fat. Plasma acts on the skin, not on the underlying fat, and using this technique for fatty eye bags is likely to lead to disappointment.
When the concern is wrinkled or lax lower-eyelid skin without an underlying fat pad, the area may improve. Distinguishing between these two situations forms part of the medical assessment and is one of the reasons we do not recommend this treatment without seeing you first.
This depends on the degree of excess skin present at the outset. Some cases can be treated in one session, while others may require additional sessions, spaced sufficiently apart to respect the skin’s natural regeneration time.
The result is long-lasting—the contracted skin does not simply return to its previous state—although the eyelid continues to age naturally. During the consultation, we will give you a more specific estimate for your individual case.
