Shaving, waxing, last-minute touch-ups before every trip. Hair removal ends up taking a permanent slot in your schedule without you ever deciding it should. Laser hair removal progressively and lastingly reduces unwanted hair on the face and body, so you can spend that time on something else.
At Clínica Provença, treatment starts before your first session, with an assessment of your skin, hair type and habits. Getting these factors right is essential for both results and safety.

The laser emits light that is selectively absorbed by the melanin in the hair. This energy is converted into heat, travels down to the follicle and disables the structures responsible for hair growth without damaging the surrounding skin. This is why treatment works best when there is a strong contrast between dark hair and light skin, and why settings are tailored to each case: the same energy is not appropriate for an underarm and an upper lip.
Hair grows in cycles, and the laser only acts on follicles that are in the active growth phase at the time of treatment. This is why several spaced sessions are needed: each session targets a different group of follicles, so the reduction builds progressively over time.
It is also important to clarify what laser hair removal is not. It is not the same as the intense pulsed light (IPL) used in many beauty centres and at-home devices, which generally operate with less power and precision. Nor is it an instant removal method: it is a staged process that follows the natural hair-growth cycle.
For each session, you arrive with the area shaved, we protect your eyes, and we adjust the energy and pulse rate to your skin. The cooling system helps keep treatment comfortable: sensations range from mild warmth to an occasional pinching feeling in more sensitive areas, and can always be adjusted. Mild, temporary redness around the follicles is common afterwards. You can usually return to your normal day, following the sun-protection and aftercare advice we give you in consultation. Over the following weeks, the treated hairs shed naturally.
Laser hair removal is usually a good option if you have dark hair and want to reduce your reliance on waxing or shaving in specific areas—such as the underarms, bikini area, legs or face—or if you are considering a more comprehensive plan. It can also be helpful if shaving causes folliculitis or ingrown hairs: by reducing hair at the follicle, it can help break that cycle.
Some cases require a more tailored approach. If your skin is dark or tanned, treatment is adapted using more conservative settings and, in some cases, a different schedule. If your facial hair has a hormonal component—such as on the chin or neck, or in areas where hair becomes more active over time—laser treatment may still help, but the plan is different: more gradual, with clear expectations and, when appropriate, coordinated with an assessment of the underlying cause. This is decided during your consultation.
And there are situations where it is better to wait or choose another option: white, grey or very light hair (without melanin, the laser has no target), pregnancy, or skin that is irritated or has recently been exposed to the sun. If this applies to you, we will explain why and discuss suitable alternatives.

Results vary depending on hair type, treatment area, skin phototype and any hormonal component. After completing the initial plan, some patients choose occasional maintenance sessions.
We listen to what concerns you and what you expect from treatment: which areas you want to treat, what you have already tried and what has not worked for you.
We assess your skin phototype, hair colour and thickness, treatment areas and habits—including sun exposure, exercise and medication—because each of these factors can affect the settings, number of sessions and schedule that are right for you.
We then give you a reasoned medical recommendation: what is appropriate for your case, what is not, and why. You leave with a clear treatment plan and quotation, and decide afterwards, without pressure.
The number of sessions and the interval between them are adjusted after assessment according to skin phototype, treatment area and individual response.

The results are long-lasting, and in many areas the reduction can remain stable for years, but we prefer not to call it “permanent”. A treated follicle does not produce hair again, but the body can activate new follicles over time due to factors such as hormonal changes, pregnancy or menopause. In practical terms, the difference is significant: you do not return to your original amount of hair, and any new growth can usually be managed with occasional maintenance sessions.
It can, although there are a few important considerations. Hair on the chin, upper lip or neck often has a hormonal component, which means these areas may require more sessions and occasional maintenance over time.
If we suspect an active hormonal cause—for example, irregular menstrual cycles or the recent appearance of coarse hair—we will discuss this during your assessment, because addressing the underlying cause can also improve the outcome of laser treatment.
Above all, two things: the technology and the clinical judgement behind it. In a medical setting, treatment is carried out with a high-powered laser and protocols defined under medical supervision, tailored to your skin phototype and reviewed according to how your skin responds at each session.
In practice, this can mean fewer sessions to achieve a comparable result and a higher level of safety in delicate areas or skin types that require extra care. If you are comparing prices per session, also compare the safety protocols, expected number of sessions and the technology being used.
It can happen, although it is uncommon and there is a recognised explanation: it is called paradoxical hair stimulation and is mainly associated with insufficient energy in facial areas with fine hair, particularly with lower-powered devices. This is why we use effective, individually adjusted settings from the outset and assess the type of hair before treating higher-risk areas.
The sensation varies depending on the area and the person. Most patients describe it as warmth with an occasional pinching feeling, more noticeable in sensitive areas such as the bikini line or upper lip. The cooling system and adjustment of the pulse rate help keep treatment comfortable, and we can always modify the energy if a particular area feels too uncomfortable.
If you have a recent tan, it is usually safer to postpone treatment on exposed areas. Skin with more melanin competes with the hair for the laser energy, which increases the risk of irritation. This does not necessarily mean stopping your entire treatment plan: some areas are not exposed to the sun and schedules can be reorganised. We plan this during your consultation so that summer does not disrupt your progress.
For safety, we postpone or avoid treatment in certain situations, including pregnancy (and, in some cases, the early stages of breastfeeding), active infections or significant irritation in the treatment area, recent tanning or self-tanner use, and certain photosensitising medicines. We review all of this carefully during your consultation, with your medical history in front of us.
