Chemical peels and depigmenting microneedling, selected after a medical assessment—because not all pigmentation is the same, and it should not all be treated in the same way.
Most people cannot remember exactly when the first mark appeared. One day, their complexion simply no longer looks even and make-up has to work harder. What you may not know is that many types of facial pigmentation can be treated effectively with a medical approach.
That is where we begin, and exactly what we clarify during your assessment: what type of pigmentation you have, which treatment is appropriate and what results you can realistically expect.

Pigmentation develops when the skin produces melanin unevenly. This may be due to cumulative sun exposure, hormonal changes—such as melasma, which is common after pregnancy or while taking hormonal contraceptives—or the residual mark left by inflammation, including acne. Different causes, different depths and different treatments.
That is why our approach does not begin with a procedure, but with a question: what type of pigmentation is this, and how deeply does it extend into the skin?
From there, we work with two main treatment options:
Medical chemical peels. A carefully selected solution is applied to the skin to renew its superficial layers in a controlled way. Pigment-laden cells are shed, allowing newer skin with a more even tone to emerge. The type and concentration of acid are chosen according to your pigmentation and skin phototype.
Microneedling with depigmenting active ingredients. Very fine microchannels are created in the skin to achieve two effects at once: stimulating regeneration and helping the active ingredients reach beyond where a topical cream can penetrate. It is particularly useful when pigmentation lies slightly deeper or when the skin requires a more gradual approach.
What it is not. This is not an instant erase or a miraculous one-session treatment. Skin renews its pigment in cycles, and treatment works alongside those cycles, with results building from one session to the next. If your pigmentation requires laser treatment, a dermatology review or simply more time, we will explain this during your assessment.
What the session is like. Treatment is brief—usually between 20 and 40 minutes, depending on the technique—with a tolerable tingling or warm sensation that settles quickly. Afterwards, the skin may feel slightly tight or peel mildly for a few days, depending on the depth of the peel. You will leave with clear aftercare instructions.
And afterwards. Daily sun protection becomes part of the treatment itself. It helps consolidate the result and prevents the pigment from being reactivated.

What you may see after completing a full treatment course: visibly reduced pigmentation—in many cases, difficult to identify unless you actively look for it—a more even complexion, improved texture and greater radiance. Microneedling also provides an additional regenerative benefit: the skin does not only look clearer, but healthier and more revitalised.
What you may see along the way: gradual improvement from session to session. Some marks can temporarily darken during the first few days after a peel before they shed; this is part of the process.
And what remains afterwards: a result that can be maintained with protection. Treated skin retains its tendency to produce pigment, and daily photoprotection helps prevent it from recurring.
We begin by listening to what concerns you and what you hope to achieve. We assess each area of pigmentation individually—whether it is sun-related, hormonal or post-inflammatory—how deeply the pigment lies and the characteristics of your skin, because your phototype determines which treatments are safe and which are not.
We then give you a medically reasoned recommendation: what is suitable for your case, what is not, and why. Sometimes the right answer is a different technique; sometimes, no treatment at all.
You leave with a clear treatment plan and quotation, and decide afterwards, without pressure.

It depends on the type of pigmentation, which is why an accurate diagnosis matters so much. A properly treated sun spot does not necessarily have to return when the skin is protected every day.
Melasma, however, has a hormonal component and tends to reactivate with sun exposure and heat. It can be visibly reduced, but requires maintenance and consistent sun protection. During your assessment, we will explain what you can realistically expect in your specific case over the long term.
This can happen when a peel is not correctly indicated. A concentration that is too strong for the skin phototype, treating melasma as though it were a sun spot, or exposing recently treated skin to direct sunlight can produce the opposite of the intended result.
That is precisely why we do not perform a peel without first assessing the type of pigmentation, the depth of the pigment and your skin type, and why we adapt the treatment plan to the time of year. The risk is not the technique itself, but using it without appropriate clinical judgement.
Pigmentation is treated as a course. This usually involves several sessions spaced a few weeks apart, allowing the skin to complete its renewal cycles between treatments.
The first improvements in skin tone are often visible after the initial sessions, while more noticeable fading develops after completing the full course. The exact number of sessions depends on the type and duration of the pigmentation and on your skin, and will be established during your assessment.
The months with less intense sun exposure are ideal for depigmenting chemical peels. Newly renewed skin is more sensitive to ultraviolet radiation, and significant exposure can reactivate pigment production.
This does not mean that nothing can be done during summer. Certain superficial protocols and preparatory options may still be appropriate during sunnier months, and your assessment can take place at any time. In fact, assessing your skin in spring or summer and planning treatment for autumn is often the most sensible sequence.
We postpone treatment during pregnancy and breastfeeding. At this stage, the skin is particularly prone to pigmentation, and we prefer not to use depigmenting active ingredients. The best strategy during this period is rigorous sun protection, which also helps prevent pregnancy-related melasma from becoming more pronounced.
Outside pregnancy and breastfeeding, we review your medical history, medication and current skin condition—including active lesions, infections and recent treatments—before confirming whether treatment is suitable.
There is no universal winner: each technique has its own indications. A chemical peel renews the layers where superficial pigment accumulates, while microneedling delivers depigmenting active ingredients more deeply and also stimulates regeneration. This can make it particularly suitable for deeper pigmentation or skin that benefits from a gentler, progressive approach. In many cases, the best response comes from combining both techniques in stages. The decision depends on your pigmentation, and this is established during your assessment.
No—and this is probably the most important question on this page. A sun spot, hormonal melasma and a post-acne mark may look similar at first glance, but they behave differently: they occur at different depths, have different triggers and require different treatments.
Treating them without first distinguishing between them is one of the most common causes of disappointing results.
There is one further consideration: if a pigmented lesion has changed in shape, colour or texture, the appropriate first step is a dermatological assessment.
