Knee Skin Tightening

Not every knee responds in the same way to poly-L-lactic acid. The first step is to determine whether your case is suitable.

The skin around the knees does not always age in line with the rest of the body: it creases, loses firmness and can seem to follow a different rhythm.

Poly-L-lactic acid can improve this area by gradually stimulating your own collagen, but it is not the right answer for every case.

During the consultation, we assess whether your knees are suitable. Booking does not commit you to having the treatment.

We provide guidance based on medical expertise.

Knee skin tightening treatment.

What does knee skin tightening treatment involve?

Poly-L-lactic acid is a collagen biostimulator: a biocompatible, resorbable compound injected into the skin to activate fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing collagen. The product is absorbed over several months; what remains is the new collagen produced by your own skin, with the aim of helping restore part of the firmness lost around the knee.

It does not fill or add volume. Nor does it tighten instantly like a lift. It works on skin quality gradually, improving firmness as your collagen responds.

This is an area where the skin is thin, has lower collagen density than other parts of the body and lies over a joint in constant movement. The product dilution, injection plane and amount are decided according to what your skin needs.

What is the session like, and what happens afterwards?

After marking the area to be treated, the product is injected into the planned plane and massaged to distribute it evenly. At the end of the appointment, you will receive specific aftercare instructions for the following days, including how to massage the area at home.

When you leave the clinic, the area may look slightly fuller: this is due to the water used for reconstitution and mild swelling, and it usually settles within a few days. This initial effect is not the final result: the real improvement comes later, as collagen is produced, and follows its own timing. Tenderness, swelling or a small bruise may also appear, usually mild and temporary.

Is it right for you?

Knees that look similar can have different underlying concerns: in one case it may be skin laxity, in another localised fat or excess skin. Understanding your situation is the first thing we assess during the consultation, because it determines whether this treatment makes sense for you.

Your case is likely to be suitable if:

  • You notice loose or crepey skin above the knee, from mild to moderate in degree.
  • Your skin still has response capacity: the aim is to stimulate the collagen it can still produce.
  • Your weight is stable and you are looking for progressive improvement, not an overnight change.
  • You can complete several sessions spaced over time if the diagnosis requires it.

Another approach should be considered if:

  • The main concern is localised fat: poly-L-lactic acid does not remove fat.
  • There is severe laxity: in these cases, the response is usually surgical.
  • You need an immediate effect: this treatment works with the timing of collagen production.
  • You are pregnant, breastfeeding or have certain medical conditions, which we will review with you during the consultation.

Determining which situation applies to you is exactly the purpose of the assessment.

Treatments guided by medical judgment, with personalised planning and a conservative approach.

What can this treatment achieve?

What we aim for is firmer, better-quality skin around the knees. The path to that result has a specific rhythm that is important to understand from the beginning, because this is often where most doubts arise.

In the first few days, you may notice some volume; this is the water used for reconstitution and it settles quickly. Then comes the phase that can be most confusing: between the first and fourth week, the knee may look as it did before, and it can be easy to think the treatment has not worked. In fact, the opposite is happening. This is when your skin is producing new collagen, a process that is not visible until it becomes visible.

From there, improvement appears gradually and continues to consolidate over the following months according to the established plan. The change is subtle because it is your own tissue responding, not an added material; the expected duration can reach around two years, depending on factors such as your skin, age and degree of laxity.

Why Clínica Provença?

Analysis of the whole leg, not only the knee

We do not assess the knee in isolation. Before recommending treatment, we evaluate the structure of the whole leg — proportion, support and tissue quality — to understand whether knee laxity is a localised concern or part of a broader pattern. This changes the indication.

Planning adapted to your anatomy

The product dilution, injection plane and amount are decided according to what your skin needs. The knee is an area of thin skin and high joint mobility: it requires a level of technical precision that can only be calibrated by seeing and palpating your specific case.

Your response guides the plan

How you perceive the change, what concerns you, what you notice between sessions — all of this is incorporated into the planning of the following sessions. The treatment is adjusted according to what your skin shows, rather than repeated automatically.

Frequently asked questions about knee skin tightening treatment

Poly-L-lactic acid does not fill or add volume. It works by stimulating the production of your own collagen, which is why the change is gradual: the skin gains firmness and density over weeks and months, not from one day to the next.

This progressive timing is what allows the improvement to integrate into your skin instead of looking like something added.

The amount used and the application technique are adapted to each case, reducing the risk of an excessive result or one that does not fit your anatomy.

Yes. The assessment may conclude that poly-L-lactic acid is not the best option for your case — because the main issue is localised fat, because there is excess skin that requires another approach, or because the expected result does not match what this treatment can realistically offer.

When that happens, we explain it clearly and, if there is a more suitable alternative, we guide you towards it. Knowing when not to treat is part of medical judgement.

As a guide, between two and three sessions, spaced at least six weeks apart. The exact number depends on your degree of laxity and how your skin responds, so it is confirmed — and may be adjusted — during the consultation and throughout the treatment process.

The volume you notice immediately after the session is water and settles within a few days; the real improvement appears gradually over several weeks and consolidates in the months after completing the sessions. It takes time because your own collagen is doing the work, and that is why the change does not look abrupt.

Poly-L-lactic acid is a biocompatible and resorbable material with a well-documented safety profile; the usual side effects are mild and temporary: swelling, tenderness or a small bruise. Thin skin and knee mobility do not contraindicate treatment: they require careful planning, which is why this is an individualised medical procedure.

Specific contraindications — pregnancy, breastfeeding, certain medical conditions or a history of abnormal scarring — are reviewed with you during the consultation.

The injections are usually well tolerated: the most common sensation is moderate, temporary local discomfort. Afterwards, you can generally return to your routine, with specific instructions that we will give you in clinic, including massage of the area during the first few days.

They are different categories. Hyaluronic acid is a filler: it adds volume immediately. Threads work through traction and the stimulation they create along their path. Poly-L-lactic acid does not fill or pull: it stimulates collagen production to gradually improve skin firmness and quality.
