Entire wardrobes can end up being chosen around hiding sweat: dark colours, fabrics that do not show marks, a spare top in your bag. If excessive sweating has been making decisions for you for a long time, there is something worth knowing: in many cases, it can be controlled with a straightforward medical treatment, without surgery.

Hyperhidrosis is sweating beyond what your body needs to regulate its temperature. It is not dependent on heat or physical exertion: the sweat glands receive more nerve stimulation than they should and respond by producing more sweat than necessary. It usually affects specific areas — most commonly the underarms, but also the palms of the hands or soles of the feet.
The treatment acts directly on that signal. We inject a neuromodulator through very superficial microinjections in the affected area. It locally, temporarily and in a controlled way blocks the chemical messenger that tells the gland to produce sweat. The gland remains intact; it simply stops receiving an excessive signal.
It is also important to understand what this treatment is not. It is not surgery: nothing is removed, there are no incisions and no postoperative recovery. Nor is it a permanent solution: the blocking effect is temporary and, over time, communication between the nerve and the gland gradually recovers, so sweating returns progressively. That reversibility, which may initially seem like a drawback, is precisely what makes the treatment highly controllable from a safety perspective.
The session takes around 30 minutes. We mark the injection points across the treatment area and perform the microinjections with a very fine needle. Afterwards, you can return to your usual routine, with a few simple precautions during the first hours. The change is gradual: sweating starts to decrease within the first few days, with the full effect usually noticeable at around two weeks.
This treatment is often a good option when your sweating is localised — affecting the underarms, hands or feet —, has been present for years and antiperspirants, including clinical-strength formulas, have not been enough. It may also suit you if you have ruled out surgery or would prefer to avoid it: this offers an effective, non-surgical alternative without the risks of an operation.
There are situations we prefer to investigate before treatment. When sweating is generalised, has started recently or is accompanied by other symptoms, there may be an underlying cause — hormonal, medication-related or medical — that should be identified first.
And there are cases in which we do not perform the treatment: during pregnancy or breastfeeding, in certain neuromuscular conditions, or when there are open wounds or active skin infections in the treatment area. We review this with you during your consultation.

The first change is the most visible one: sweat marks on clothing are greatly reduced. Most patients notice a significant decrease in sweating in the treated area, enough to choose what they want to wear rather than what their sweating allows.
The second change can take a little longer to notice, but often matters even more: you stop planning around your sweating. Meetings, exercise, greeting someone with a hug, raising your arm without thinking about it.
When sweating decreases, associated body odour often improves too, because the bacteria that cause it lose the moist environment in which they thrive.
The effect usually lasts for around six months, although this varies from person to person, and treatment can be repeated when it begins to wear off. Many patients incorporate it as one or two appointments a year, often before summer.
We start by listening: what concerns you, how long it has been happening and what you would like to achieve.
We then assess your sweating pattern: where it occurs, how intense it is, what triggers it and whether there may be an underlying factor — medication, hormonal changes or another medical condition — that should be investigated before treatment.
We then give you a medically reasoned recommendation: what is suitable for your case, what is not, and why. Sometimes the right answer is a different technique; sometimes, no treatment at all.

Yes, essentially we are talking about the same treatment. “Botox” is the name commonly used for botulinum toxin type A. We prefer the term neuromodulator because it better describes what it does: it modulates the nerve signal reaching the sweat gland.
The effect usually lasts for around six months, although this varies from person to person: for some people it wears off sooner, while for others it can last up to a year. When you notice sweating starting to return, another session can restore the effect. Duration depends on factors such as the dose, injection technique and your individual metabolism, so during your assessment we give you an expectation tailored to your case.
No, and that is not the aim. The treatment reduces sweating in the area to a normal or slightly below-normal level; you may still choose to use deodorant, as anyone might. Our goal is for sweating to stop interfering with your life, not to eliminate a function your body needs.
This is a common concern, particularly among people who have read about surgery for hyperhidrosis, where compensatory sweating is a recognised issue. With neuromodulator treatment it is uncommon and, when it does occur, it is usually mild and temporary. The underarms contain only a small proportion of the body’s sweat glands, so treating this area does not force the rest of the body to work harder.
We perform a series of small, very superficial injections with a fine needle across the area. Most patients describe them as brief pinpricks: some are noticeable, others barely so. The whole session takes around 30 minutes.
Botulinum toxin type A has been used in medicine for decades across several specialties, with a well-established and well-documented safety profile. For hyperhidrosis, it acts locally and reversibly in the treated area.
As with any medical procedure, there are situations in which treatment is not appropriate. We do not perform it during pregnancy or breastfeeding, in certain neuromuscular conditions, or when there are active skin lesions or infections in the treatment area. When treating the palms specifically, some patients experience a mild, temporary reduction in pinch strength, which resolves on its own within a few weeks. We review all of this with you before deciding whether treatment is right for you.
Yes, because it acts at a different point in the sweating process. Antiperspirants block the duct through which sweat reaches the skin; the neuromodulator interrupts the nerve signal that tells the gland to produce it. That is why it can work when clinical-strength antiperspirants are not enough: rather than dealing with sweat once it has been produced, it helps prevent excessive production in the first place.
The underarms are the most commonly treated area, with the longest track record and strongest clinical evidence. The hands and feet can also be treated, with specific considerations: response and duration may vary, and suitability is assessed individually during your consultation.
