What daily skincare can offer and when it makes sense to consider treatment.
You may have noticed that your jawline looks less defined, even though you still look after your skin. Improving the lower facial contour may involve improving skin firmness, addressing a loss of structural support or treating tissue descent, depending on what is causing the change.
Daily skincare helps keep your skin in good condition. In selected cases, medical treatments can improve the contour without surgery, although their effects differ from those of a surgical facelift.
The lower facial contour follows the jawline and chin. Its shape depends on the skin, the distribution of fat, the underlying bone structure and the tissues that connect these layers. Muscle activity also contributes to the appearance of this area.
Over time, the skin loses elasticity and the supporting tissues can change. Fat volume and distribution also change, as does the underlying bony support. These processes do not affect every face in the same way or to the same degree.
This is why well-cared-for skin can coexist with a less defined jawline. It is also why not every change around the jaw is due to skin laxity: fat beneath the chin, volume loss in the cheek or the shape of the chin itself can influence what you see. Understanding the difference helps avoid trying to address different concerns with the same approach.
Skincare has a useful role to play. Sun protection helps prevent photoageing, moisturising improves skin comfort and appearance, and some retinoids can improve signs of sun damage and support collagen formation. Your routine should suit your skin’s needs and tolerance.
The limit lies in the type of change skincare can achieve. A cream cannot restore bony support or reposition tissues that have descended. It can improve the appearance of your skin without restoring jawline definition.
If you have been consistent with your routine but your jawline has barely changed, you may be expecting skincare to deliver an effect it cannot provide. Before adding another product, it helps to clarify what you want to improve: skin texture, firmness or the contour itself.
Facial exercises work specific muscles, while gua sha tools and facial rollers are used to massage the face. Although they are often discussed together, they are different practices and their potential effects should not be assumed to be the same.
The available evidence does not establish that these practices can produce a meaningful, lasting improvement in sagging jowls. It is also unclear how long any changes last once you stop.
If they are part of a routine you enjoy, you can use them as an addition to your skincare, with realistic expectations. They should not be relied on as a proven way to reposition tissues.
In some cases, firmness or definition can be improved, but the result depends on the cause and extent of the change. Improving the contour does not always mean lifting tissues. It may also involve addressing a volume deficit or improving skin quality.
Hyaluronic acid fillers add volume or projection at specific points, such as the chin, cheekbone or certain areas of the jawline, when a facial assessment supports their use. Collagen stimulators can progressively improve tissue firmness and quality. Sometimes the two are combined, with the amounts used and the timing tailored to each case.
Certain radiofrequency and ultrasound technologies can also improve skin laxity in selected cases. Their effects depend on the device, treatment protocol and tissue characteristics. Not all devices produce the same effect.
When there is significant tissue descent and excess skin, non-surgical options have a limited effect. A surgical assessment may be appropriate if more substantial tissue repositioning is the goal. Understanding this limit helps you make a decision with realistic expectations.

“I’d like you to put something along my jawline” is a common request when sagging develops on either side of the face, interrupting the smooth outline of the lower face. Before deciding what to use, I assess what is causing the change and how it relates to the rest of the face.
For example, two patients may point to exactly the same area and need a different approach. In one, I find a loss of support and small hollows that make the sagging more noticeable. Hyaluronic acid filler at specific points may help restore a smoother contour. In the other, the face retains enough structural support, but the tissues have lost firmness. In that case, I may prioritise a collagen stimulator to improve firmness progressively, avoiding more volume than necessary.
Sometimes it makes sense to combine both approaches in stages. The choice depends on what each face needs and what each treatment can offer. It may also be necessary to treat nearby areas that contribute to support, such as the cheek or chin, even though the patient has pointed to the jawline.
If the sagging is significant, I explain the limits of these options. Trying to compensate by adding more product can widen the face without achieving the definition we are looking for.
If the change is mild and you feel comfortable with your appearance, you can continue with your usual skincare. There is no set age or point at which you need to start treating your jawline.
An assessment makes sense when you want to understand what has changed, find out what improvement is possible or clarify whether any option could meet your expectations. It can also help if a previous treatment did not give you the result you expected. Reviewing what was done and how your face responded helps guide the next step.
You can seek advice even if you have not decided to have treatment. The assessment helps identify what is affecting your facial contour and agree on an approach proportionate to your goals. That may include continuing with skincare and monitoring any changes.
Improving your jawline starts with understanding what your face needs. With that information, it is easier to know what to expect from daily skincare and what improvement a treatment might offer, if it is appropriate for you.
